A Day exceeds campus goal

The President’s Club Luncheon in September marked the end of the campus campaign for this year’s A Day for Augusta State University and the beginning of the community campaign. Hosted by ASU President William A. Bloodworth, Jr., the annual event featured an update on the campus campaign by Drs. Hubert and Debra van Tuyll, campus co-chairs, who expressed appreciation to the faculty, staff, and students for surpassing the goal and raising over $152,000.

ASU alumnus and senior vice president for CSRA Community Banking at Wachovia, Phil Wahl, this year’s community campaign leader, shared with the audience his goals for this year’s campaign. He says he hopes the hard work that was displayed in the campus campaign will also inspire those in the community to give. “The things we have accomplished so far have been phenomenal,” says Mr. Wahl. “With the campus reaching numbers like that in this economy, it sends an exciting message to the community.”

Other A Day campaign events include a concert and fireworks display at the D. Douglas Barnard, Jr., Amphitheatre on Friday, Oct. 3. John Krueger and Blue Cotton will perform at 6 p.m., and the fireworks display will be presented at 9:30 p.m. Admission is free. The Alumni Association’s Jaguar Jaunt will be held on Saturday, Oct. 4, beginning at 8 a.m. at the Maxwell Alumni House. The public is invited to put on their running shoes for the annual 5-K run/walk race as the university races to reach this year’s goal.

On Wednesday, Oct. 8, the nursing department will host the annual Health Fair, from10 a.m. to 2 p.m. in the Christenberry Field House. Local healthcare providers will join in providing free services that include blood pressure checks, screenings for vision, hearing, and glucose, and more.

A Day, Friday, Oct. 10, will begin with a Phi Kappa Phi Symposium at 10 a.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Coffeehouse, with Dr. Hubert van Tuyll making a presentation on War and History: Comprehension & Performance. The day will culminate with the Alumni Association Barbecue and A Day Celebration in the ASU Quadrangle at 5:30 p.m. This event celebrates the ASU fundraising campaign, and donations for the barbecue will be used to support the Faculty/Alumni scholarship fund. The total for both campaigns will be announced at this event. With a contribution to A Day, tickets are $8 each (limit 2) and $12.50 for each additional ticket.
