Augusta, Ga. – A Master of Education in Teacher Leadership—the first such degree offered in the state based on national teacher leader standards and proposed Georgia teacher leader standards—will enroll its first students at Augusta State University in the spring 2011 semester. ASU received approval for the new degree by the Board of Regents of the University System of Georgia at their August meeting.
Offered by ASU’s Department of Educational Leadership, Counseling, and Special Education, the degree is designed for classroom teachers holding certification in at least one area and who seek greater responsibility and influence beyond their individual classrooms.
“This program will further enhance teacher competence and effectiveness as they work with children in Georgia’s K-12 schools by building their leadership skills and addressing the need for continued development of content and pedagogical knowledge and skills,” says Wayne Lord, chair of the department.
The MEd in Teacher Leadership is a 39-credit hour program leading to a T-5 Georgia teaching certificate. Candidates choose a content specialization or may earn endorsements through electives in the program.
The program’s goal is to prepare practicing classroom teachers to become effective teacher leaders through a curriculum that increases student learning. The program of study also addresses improving school culture, using best instructional practices, addressing all learners, fostering collaboration among school, community, and program participants, understanding leadership in schools, and developing schools as professional learning communities.
“Although there is some overlap in what principals and teachers need to know, the focus of this advanced degree is keeping teachers in the classroom, allowing them to lead from their expertise in teaching, and equipping them with the skills to lead peers through aiding and supporting building level administrators,” says Lord.
Program requirements include a minimum baccalaureate grade point average of 2.5, a clear, renewable certification, and test scores of the Graduate Record Examination or the Miller Analogies Test.
