Augusta, Ga. – Aaron Beam, Jr., co-founder and chief financial officer of HealthSouth, Inc., confessed to fraud, was imprisoned, and now will share his experiences with students in the James M. Hull College of Business at Augusta State University so that they can learn from his mistakes. This public program in the Russell A. Blanchard Distinguished Lecture Series will be presented Thursday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center Ballroom at ASU.
Mr. Beam will share his experiences that took him from corporate success to corporate scandal. He built his company from the ground up in 1984. He raised some venture capital, took the company public in two years, became a millionaire overnight and saw the company become the darling of Wall Street. However, more than 10 years after the rise of HealthSouth, Mr. Beam found himself in the middle of a corporate scandal. He lost almost everything and ended up in prison.
“I think others can learn from my story; from how I started a major company, how I got involved in the fraud while serving as Chief Financial Officer, and more importantly, the human story, the pain of going through a trial and going to prison,” Mr. Beam says.
The Russell A. Blanchard Distinguished Lecture Series presents an annual lecture on business ethics to inspire students, faculty, and community leaders in their ethical decision making. Distinguished lecturers articulate lessons learned and provide insight into the complex world of business.
