ASU observes Violence Awareness Week

Augusta, Ga. – Sexual assault, intimate partner violence, crime, and healthy relationships will be the topics covered during Violence Awareness Week, Oct. 12-15, at Augusta State University.

Kicking-off the week will be a Walking the Path of Awareness information fair on Monday, Oct. 12, from 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Jaguar Student Activities Center breezeway. Community agencies including SafeHomes, Rape Crisis, ASU’s Counseling Services, and Public Safety will be on hand to provide information about violence prevention.

At 5:30 p.m., a panel to discuss the legal aspects of crime will be held in the JSAC ballroom. Members of the panel will include Todd Powell-Williams, assistant professor in ASU’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work; Peter Flanagan, assistant professor in ASU’s Department of Political Science; and Judge James Blanchard, Circuit Court and former Juvenile Court judge.

The Wall of Pain, a visual representation of victims of violence in the Augusta area, will be displayed on Tuesday, Oct. 13, at 11:30 a.m. in the JSAC breezeway. Later that evening at 7 p.m., an interactive theatrical troupe will present Sex Signals. The presentation mixes improvisational comedy, education, and audience participation while provoking discussions about dating, sex, and the issue of consent.

On Wednesday at 11:30 a.m., ASU students will gather at the Wall of Pain, wearing tape over their mouths, to honor victims who were silenced by fear, intimidation, and disbelief. Wrestling with Manhood: Boys, Bullying, and Battering will be shown at 6 p.m. that evening in the JSAC Coffeehouse.

Healthy relationships will be the focus of events on Thursday, Oct. 15. ASU students, faculty, and staff will gather at the Wall of Pain to resurface the wall with positive images of people and inspiring quotes at 11:30 a.m. in the JSAC breezeway. Shannon Nix, counselor in ASU’s Counseling Center, will conduct a presentation on Healthy Relationships at 2:30 p.m. in the 3rd floor student lounge in University Hall.
