Augusta, Ga.-They may be just faces, but these individuals are someone’s mother, father, sister, brother, husband, wife, child, or other loved one… and they were murdered. Dr. Kimberly Davies, chair of Augusta State University’s Department of Sociology, Criminal Justice, and Social Work, has her students putting up the visual display of the 16,929 people murdered during 2007 in the United States in the atrium of Allgood Hall on Monday, June 1, beginning at noon. Augusta, Ga. – President Barack Obama’s nomination of Sonia Sotomayor to the U.S. Supreme Court would make her the nation’s first Hispanic Supreme Court justice.
According to Pedro Hoyos-Salcedo, associate professor of Spanish at Augusta State University, Sotomayor’s nomination has pros and cons. While he feels that she has not always made decisions in the best interests of the Hispanic community, he does see how her nomination is good for Hispanics. Read the full story

Augusta, Ga. – Mr. Edward Polite, a retired corporate executive, was presented the 2009 President’s Award—one of the highest honors bestowed by Augusta State University —at the President’s Club reception held May 7.
Mr. Polite is an ASU Foundation trustee who was recognized for his significant service to ASU and for his generosity in providing the opportunity for future generations of students to find an improved quality of life through education. Read the full story

Augusta, Ga. – Dr. Raymond Whiting, who has been serving as faculty assistant to the president and accreditation liaison, will serve as faculty assistant to the president and assistant vice president for institutional effectiveness beginning on July 1, 2009.
In his role as assistant vice president for institutional effectiveness, Dr. Whiting will report to Dr. Samuel Sullivan, vice president for academic affairs. “In this new role, Dr. Whiting will provide the leadership to coordinate the university’s efforts toward reaffirmation of its accreditation from the Commission on Colleges of the Southern Association of Colleges and,” said Dr. Sullivan.
