Quilt Codes and Slave Trade to be discussed at ASU

Augusta, Ga. – Secret messages in the form of quilt patterns were used as a method of communication to help slaves escape from Southern states before and during the American Civil War. These quilt codes will be examined and discussed as part of the Student Research Forum which will be held on Thursday, Feb. 12, at 2:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall at Augusta State University.

Information about the 18th and 19th century slave trade will also be presented. Each presentation will be conducted by ASU students Robin Scharf and Betsy Picciano, respectively.

If you are interested in pursuing this story idea, call Tunisia Williams, assistant director, in the Office of Public Relations and Publications at 706-737-1877.
