Positive results for ASU’s academic achievement program

Augusta, Ga. – Positive results have been seen in a new program to provide reinforcement to Augusta State University students about the academic benefits of living in ASU’s student housing, University Village (UV). Called Resident Academic Rewards, the program provides a financial incentive to residents who excel in the classroom.

For the 2008 fall semester, 42 UV students made the Dean’s List (3.66 grade point average) and earned $250 in JagCard cash while 79 students who achieved a 3.0 GPA earned $100 in JagCard cash.  The classifications of those students who received the rewards consisted of 24 freshmen, 9 sophomores, 3 juniors, and one senior.

To be eligible for the reward, students had to be in good standing with the university and meet the following requirements:
•    completed at least 9 credit hours in courses at the 1000 level or above
•    have no K grades or I, F, or WF for the semester, and
•    have a minimum overall institutional GPA of at least 2.0.

“Living in student housing has been shown to improve student academic performance,” says Dr. Joyce Jones, vice president for student services.

“We offer several programs at University Village to promote academic success. Through this Resident Academic Rewards program, we want to communicate this to students and to recognize those residents who achieve these academic goals.

“We are excited about this academic reward program being offered to the residents of University Village,” Dr. Jones adds.  “We have students who are serious about their education, and this is one way that we can encourage them to excel in the classroom.”
