Last spring, a subcommittee of the University Council was formed to develop 5-year initiatives for the university, based on the following guidelines:
• Initiatives should connect with the goals of the University System.
• Initiatives should be positive and productive, focusing on growth and development.
• Initiatives should be brief. Details come later.
• Initiatives must be measurable or assessable.
• Initiatives are not meant to be all-inclusive.
The committee reviewed unit plans from across campus, looking for common themes, after which it developed several key initiatives. The initiatives were presented and discussed at the April 15 faculty meeting, where it was decided to table the motion for further study. Comments were sought by the subcommittee through email, and the initiatives were then revised and presented to the Faculty Policies Committee on April 28. FPC unanimously approved the initiatives.
In order to seek additional input from campus, the subcommittee is holding a special forum on Tuesday, Sept. 2, at 2:30 p.m. in 170 University Hall, after which the initiatives will be presented for approval at the first faculty meeting. The initiatives are intended as a guide to focus university growth and improvement but are not meant to be all-inclusive or a replacement of the mission statement. These initiatives are designed to be assessable, broadly applicable, and intentionally connected to the goals of the University System of Georgia.
The proposed key initiatives are to:
1. enhance and continue to develop the strengths of the Augusta State University faculty (system goals 1 and 2),
2. expand resources to foster student academic success (system goal 1),
3. enhance support for learning in science and mathematics (system goal 1),
4. develop additional academic facilities to meet enrollment needs (system goal 2), and
5. strengthen collaboration with and service to K-12 education (system goal 4).
