The university’s annual Lyceum Series will kick off this season with a performance by the internationally acclaimed Silk Road Ensemble on Thursday, Sept. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Maxwell Theatre. The performance is also part of the city’s celebration of the Westobou Festival.
Silk Road Ensemble explores the relationship between tradition and innovation in music and, since its inception in 1998, has brought together musicians, composers, artists, and audiences in over 20 countries. They have commissioned over 60 works from composers in a variety of nations and reached thousands of people at sold-out performances throughout Europe, Asia, and North America. They have performed in such venues as Carnegie Hall, Millinium Park, and the Hollywood Bowl in America; Royal Albert Hall in London; Shanghai Stadium and Hong Kong Cultural Center in China; and Concert Hall in Switzerland. Their most recent recording, released in 2007, is Silk Road Journeys: Beyond the Horizon. The musicians performing at this concert tour and record regularly with famed cellist Yo-Yo Ma, Silk Road’s artistic director and founder.
