ASU Fall Film Series

By Natalie Barrett

Emphasizing the need for globalization, the world becomes a smaller place at Augusta State University during its annual Fall Film Series, commencing with Under the Same Moon, a Spanish-language film set in Mexico. The Department of Communications and Professional Writing will present featured films from America, Germany, and Iran on Monday nights at 7 p.m. in 170 University Hall from Sept. 27 through Oct. 22.

Featured films include:

Monday, Sept. 22 - Under the Same Moon is a story that tells of the unbreakable bond shared by a mother and child. When the mother, Rosario, leaves Mexico and moves to America in search of a better life, she leaves her son, Carlitos, behind. However, life in Mexico becomes unbearable for Carlitos, and he becomes determined to be reunited with his mother in America. This film is in Spanish with English subtitles.

Critics and audiences alike have praised this inspirational and heartwarming tale of a mother’s devotion and a son’s courage and love that knows no borders. - Fox Searchlight Pictures

Monday, Sept. 29 - Persepolis, an animated film set in Iran, is a heartrending film about a young girl, Marjane, who refuses to have her life’s philosophy suppressed. To ensure her safety during the Islamic Revolution, Marjane’s parents send her to school in Austria. She survives peer pressure and loneliness during her teenage years only to discover in young adulthood that her heart longs to be back in Iran with her family. In adulthood, she must decide between family and principles. The film is in French with English subtitles.

Persepolis is graphically engaging with its black-and-white, bold lines and feeling of repressed energy, fit to burst. The emotional content is so strong that after awhile, one almost forgets the film is a cartoon. - Film critic Tom Keogh

Monday, Oct. 6 - Young@Heart is a film spotlighting a choir based in Massachusetts composed of members over the age of 73. The group does not let their age or anything else associated with becoming elderly limit their performance – through music these friends bond and prove that age is just a number. From James Brown to Talking Heads, these “seniors” put on a crowd-pleasing show that extends beyond the American border.

Monday, Oct. 13 - The Counterfeiters, which won the 2007 Academy Awards Best Foreign Language Film, is based on the true story of Salon Sorowitsch, a successful currency and passport forger, who survived living in a Nazi concentration camp. Convicted of forgery, Sorowitsch was sentenced to a hard labor camp until it was realized that his forgery ability would be valuable to the Nazis’ plan to take over the economic world. Sorowitsch and other imprisoned counterfeiters are treated better than the other prisoners causing feelings of jealousy amongst them.

This film is in German with English subtitles.

Monday, Oct. 20 - Up the Yangtze documents the transformation of the Yangtze, known in China as “The River,” and the lives it affects as the Chinese government works to globalize China. The documentary chronicles the lives of two teenagers during the last summer that tour boats were allowed to travel on the Yangtze. China, the Yangtze, and the teenagers will never be the same after the summer of 1994.

This film features English, Mandarin, and Sichuan with English subtitles.

Monday, Oct. 27 - Standard Operating Procedure documents the torture that U.S. soldiers inflicted upon Iraq’s Abu Ghraib prisoners. The director, Errol Morris, sets out to find whether U.S. soldiers were simply following commands or were acting on their own accord. The documentary explores the moral implications of the soldier’s behavior on the soldiers themselves as well as the captives. The film shows pictures of the horrific crimes committed, but leaves the audience to question whether the pictures are reliable evidence of what occurred behind the bars at Abu Ghraib prison.

Admission is free to the Monday Night Film Series. For more information, contact the Department of Communications and Professional Writing at 706-729-2416.
