Campus Notables

In this section of ASU Report, read about the presentations, publications, honors, and other notable accomplishments of our amazing faculty and staff.

Ted Atkinson, English and foreign languages, presented The Impenetrable Lightness of Being: Miscegenation Imagery and the Anxiety of Whiteness in Faulkner’s Go Down, Moses at the 2008 Faulkner and Yoknapatawpha Conference, an annual event held at the University of Mississippi. His paper will also be published in a book of conference papers produced by the University Press of Mississippi in 2010.
In addition, Dr. Atkinson’s essay Redeeming Depravity: The Legacy of Southwestern Humor in Erskine Caldwell’s Tobacco Road and Larry Brown’s Father and Son appears in the latest issue of Studies in American Humor.

Jurgen Brauer, Hull College of Business, published Income, War, and Elections in the summer edition of FORUM, a journal for the National Honor Society of Phi Kappa Phi. Dr. Brauer also will be taking a leave of absence to serve as research director of a new foundation being created in Boulder, Colo., to work on global governance, transnational corporations, and human security issues.

Paul Gustafson, kinesiology and health science, completed a 400-mile bicycle trip from Buffalo to Albany, N. Y., during July.

Paulette Harris, educational leadership, counseling, and special education, received the District 26 Educational Leader of the Year award from the United States Power Squadron, the world’s largest boating education organization. She also received the Phi Delta Kappa leadership service award for 2008.
Dr. Harris presented a one-day workshop for Jefferson County School leaders on July 30.

Edgar LaMotte, media services, received his American citizenship on July 22. He is a native of Panama.

Pam Lightsey, JagCard Office, has been named the assistant governor for Rotary District 6920 for 2009-2010. She will serve a three-year term representing several clubs within the Augusta area.

Karen Mobley, student development, completed her Education Specialist degree in Educational Leadership last month.

Bill Nelson, Reese Library, was selected by the Association of College and Research Libraries to present a workshop on Assessment of Academic Library Effectiveness: Using ACRL Standards for Continuous Evaluation on June 27 in Anaheim, Calif. Dr. Nelson also served as a library consultant in July to Bethel College in McKenzie, Tenn.

Camilla B. Reid, Reese Library, was one of two winners of the fourth annual SirsiDynix ALA APA Award for Outstanding Achievement in Promoting Salaries and Status for Library Workers.

Hubert van Tuyll, history, anthropology, and philosophy, signed copies of his book, Castles, Battles, & Bombs: How Economics Explains Military History, on Saturday, July 26, at Borders Bookstore. The book is co-authored with Dr. Jurgen Brauer, Hull College of Business.
