Augusta Economic Commentary

NATIONAL SUMMARY
While some indicators are showing positives signs, the labor market continues to signal that the national economy is in the midst of a recession. Total nonfarm employment declined by 62,000 jobs in June. To add to this, April’s and May’s employment numbers were revised downward indicating another 50,000 jobs lost. Read the full story

Unveiling the Origins of an American Treasure


The Rocky Mountains is one of the most breathtaking landscapes found in America, and learning how this massive structure was formed will be one task that an Augusta State University professor and his students will soon undertake.

On August 2, Dr. Christian Poppeliers, assistant professor of physics, and four ASU students will travel to the Rocky Mountain range to spend two weeks collecting magnetic data that will help them find fault lines in the region. The team will then use the data to form geological maps and to see how the mountains were formed. Read the full story

MPA Program Receives Accreditation


The Master of Public Administration degree program has earned accreditation from the National Association of Schools of Public Affairs and Administration (NASPAA), a recognition that the program successfully meets the high level of quality required for the additional prestigious accreditation. Of the institutions having undergraduate and/or graduate degrees in public affairs and administrations, only 59 percent have earned the accreditation (154 institutions). Read the full story

Earn your Jaguar Blue Belt


Lean Six Sigma, a business improvement program being used throughout the world, has been modified to become a training program for faculty and staff of Augusta State as part of the state’s Customer Service Initiative. Lean Six Sigma is geared to eliminating wasted time, material, and efforts in hopes of creating a better quality of customer service, says ASU’s Customer Service Champion Walt Alexanderson.
